The Role of Your Cabin Air Filter
The cabin air filter is usually found behind the glove box. It filters the air that comes into the cabin through the HVAC system. The filter traps dust, pollen, pollution, mold spores, and anything else in the air that you don’t want to breathe. It’s especially helpful for people who suffer from environmental allergies.
The cabin air filter will become clogged in time, making it less effective at maintaining air quality. You’ll need to replace the filter periodically.
How Often Should You Replace Your Air Filter?
To know when to change the cabin air filter, you can check your owner’s manual. It will give an estimate, which is often between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. If you don’t have your owner’s manual, you can talk to the service technicians at Mark Christopher Cadillac Service Center.
Some common signs that your cabin air filter is less effective and needs to be replaced, include:
- More dust settling on the dashboard and other surfaces
- Unpleasant odors that linger
- Airflow is reduced when you turn the AC or heat on
How to Change Your Cabin Air Filter
Once again, you’ll need to look at your owner’s manual. It will tell you where the cabin air filter is located. If it’s behind the glove box or under the hood, you should be able to access it easily. If it’s under the dashboard, you may have more of a challenge.
You’ll want to wear a mask to not breathe in the particles caught in the filter. You should have on gloves as well. Before removing the old filter, you’ll want to get a new one from our Parts Center.
